Job Description:
Position: Associate Lawyer (Cross Border Practice)
With over 35 years of legal experience, Altro LLP is a boutique law firm providing sophisticated cross
border tax, estate planning and real estate legal services to high net worth individuals.
We are presently seeking an Associate Lawyer for our Toronto or Montreal office. This is an excellent
opportunity to join an established firm and gain experience with leading lawyers in the cross-border
field. The successful candidate should have 1-3 years of post-call experience in Canadian and U.S. estate
planning and personal or corporate tax planning, excellent file management, organizational, analytical
and communication skills. An entrepreneurial desire to develop a practice and to actively participate in
complex and challenging matters and research projects is essential.
Responsibilities:
- – Analyze client issues and draft memorandums of law on estate planning opportunities and tax
minimization strategies; - – Conduct necessary legal research to address estate and tax issues as well as cross border specific
scenarios; - – Draft implementation documents such as complex wills and trusts, partnership agreements and
implement corporate structures; - – Provide clients with timely and responsive service, keeping clients consistently apprised of file
progress; - – Demonstrate an avid interest in continuously enhancing legal expertise through research and
self-study; - – Maintain up-to-date knowledge on changing tax and estate planning legislation, regulations and
policies and apply this knowledge to client matters; - – Effectively implement practice administration processes to successfully manage client
expectations and deadlines; - – Contribute to firm publications;
- – Attend and participate in speaking engagements and seminars;
- – Identify and initiate business development opportunities through attending appropriate
networking and/or technical expertise initiatives;
Qualifications:
- – 1-3 years post-call experience
- – Practice experience in Ontario Estate Planning, estate planning in another Canadian jurisdiction,
and/or estate planning in a U.S. jurisdiction - – Interest in US/Canadian cross border issues
- – Familiarity with corporate reorganizations
- – Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- – Impeccable communication, organizational and analytical skills
- – Complex problem solving abilities
- – Strong attention to detail and accuracy with the ability to multi-task and meet aggressive
deadlines - – Outstanding time management and client-management skills
