Julian has been a member of the Ontario Bar since 2017 and practices law at Altro LLP as a cross-border Canada/US corporate tax lawyer. At Altro LLP, Julian provides comprehensive tax advice to clients with a cross-border Canada/US footprint. In addition to providing tax advice, Julian plays an integral role in the implementation of cross-border structures and the purchase and sale of businesses on both sides of the border.
Julian’s clients include high net worth families and business owners. Julian offers his clients effective solutions in the following areas: (i) personal tax and estate planning for high-net worth individuals, which include the use of family trusts, estate freezes, and cross-border estate planning; (ii) succession planning for owner-managers and family businesses, including corporate reorganizations, shareholder agreement and the effective use of life insurance; and (iii) private company taxation. Julian enjoys assisting his clients develop comprehensive succession plans for their family-owned businesses, while being mindful of all cross-border issues.
As an Ontario lawyer, Julian also has a domestic corporate practice. Julian’s corporate practice is focused on supporting the legal needs of his clients by ensuring they are compliant with the most current regulations affecting their businesses and industries and that the most tax efficient structure is being used. Julian is able to assist his clients at all stages of their corporation, including, but not limited to: (i) incorporations; (ii) reorganizations; (iii) mergers and acquisitions; (iv) continuances; and (v) dissolution.
Julian graduated from the University of Windsor, where he obtained his MBA and JD degrees in 2017. While at Windsor, Julian received the Don Riley Award for academic, community, and leadership merit, as well as the First Overall Legal Presentation Award at the UWill Discover Conference. Julian completed the Bloomberg Essentials Certifications in core, fixed income, equity, commodity, and foreign exchange matters, before going on to teach other students as the Odette Financial Markets Lab graduate assistant. Julian obtained his undergraduate degree in psychology from King’s University College at Western University in 2013, where he received the Principal’s Regis Scholarship for top academic average. Currently, Julian is in his final year of the three-year CPA In-Depth Tax Course.
Private Client Services: I provide comprehensive tax advice to high net worth clients with a cross-border Canada/US footprint; specifically, I assist owner-managers with succession planning by implementing tax efficient structures to achieve their personal and business needs (e.g., implementing an estate freeze)
Corporate Tax Planning: I have gained valuable experience with complex corporate transactions in the cross-border context (e.g., M&A transactions, financings, and joint venture structuring)

Cross-Border Estate Planning: I am responsible for drafting cross-border hybrid trusts for clients that address both Canadian and US tax and trust laws with the goal of providing protection from probate and incapacity proceedings, while allowing our clients to retain full control over the trust and trust prorpety; additioanlly, I draft US durable powers of attorney and designations of health care surrogates for our clients
Corporate-Commercial: assisted business start-ups in establishing themselves as corporations; assisted existing and growing businesses with reorganizations; drafted shareholder agreements, employment contracts, commercial leases, non-competition agreements, and service agreements; assisting clients with the purchase and sale of businesses; assisting clients with the dissolution, continuance, and amalgamation of their corporations
Tax Dispute Resolution: prepared Taxpayer Relief Applications to reduce or eliminate penalties and interest; negotiated with the CRA to lift enforcement actions and establish Voluntary Payment Plans; and prepared Voluntary Disclosure applications to correct clients’ incorrect filings
